Abstract

We are designing and constructing a Playground for a child suffering from dwarfism, and severe hearing loss.

Introduction

We met with the family, which consisted of the mother Trish, the daughter Brianna, and her 3 brothers. Being that this project was directly for the child we decided to incorporate some of the child, Brianna's, favorite things: bright colors, frogs, fairies, slides, swing sets, things to climb on, and many other activities.

Design Specifications

The obvious specification is the size of the playground, being that the child has dwarfism, however still yearns to play like other children. The mother also wished that the design could be easily disassembled and moved. The last largest specification, was that the child should not be allowed to climb above 5 feet off the ground.

Design Concepts

We created 3 unique design concepts, with sub designs under the unique ones.
1. Cost effective, highly mobile design

2. Metal, cost effective design

3. Playground wonderland design

Concept Evaluation

Design Overview

The final design was selected to be a modified* kit purchased from Detailed Play Systems out of Springfield, New Jersey.

*Modified by lowering of the main platform.

Analysis

The three types of analysis' used were maximum loading stress for a beam, maximum loading stress for a platform, and maximum tipping force of the structure.

Engineering analysis 1

Analysis of the maximum load of the main beam used in for the swing set was essential.

Engineering analysis 2

Analysis of the maximum load of the platform and its supports.

Engineering analysis 3

Analysis of the tipping force required as related to the weight of the structure.
